Synopsis
Based on the original work by Ban Yu, a leading figure in contemporary Northeastern Chinese literature and the literary planner of The Long Season, this series joins forces with Magnolia Award Best Screenwriters Li Xiao and Yu Miao to bring slice-of-life mystery storytelling to its climax. Blending Northeastern humor with desolation, it focuses on ordinary people struggling against fate amid the torrents of history—and the brilliant flashes of their lives.
The story takes place in a declining industrial city in Northeast China in the 1990s, where a string of bizarre and unsettling murders unfolds: a drunk frozen into an ice sculpture, a burly man brutally dismembered, a local gangster who vanishes without a trace… They seem to have nothing to do with one another, yet their fates are tightly intertwined and their emotions deeply entangled. Behind the chain of “accidental deaths,” painstaking investigation reveals the warmth within complex human nature, as well as hope beneath the cruel laws of survival.
